Maupiti,
a small tranquil island 40 km (25 miles) west of Bora Bora
is considered one of the most beautiful islands in the South
Seas. The main island is surrounded by a sparkling lagoon
with long "motu" islets offshore, providing coral gardens
for watermelon and cantaloupe plantations, as well as white
sand beaches and excellent snorkeling grounds. Accommodations
are available in pensions
on "motu" islets and in houses in
the main village.
Activities include a 3-hour walking tour
of Maupiti, visits houses in the main village, visits to the
archeological sites, boat excursions to various islets,
with picnic lunch, paddling outrigger canoes, or fishing
in the lagoon and pass for lobster and fish. Removed from
the world of mass tourism, Maupiti welcomes its visitors
rather shyly, and with genuine warmth.
