Polynesian People

French Polynesia counts about 260 000 people, 160 000 of which live in Tahiti. The island 's inside which is difficult to access is not populated and the bulk of the population is concentrated on the narrow coastal strip.
There exist 4 ethnic groups:
  • The natives Polynesians or Ma'ohi representing 68%.
  • The "Demis", born from an ethnic mix of Ma'ohi, Chinese, and European, representing 15%.
  • The Chinese (tinito) arrived in the previous century and representing 5%.
  • The Europeans (Popaa), mostly from France representing the remaining 11% of the population.
